The aim of the NIHR Policy Research Unit (PRU) in Behavioural Science is to inform government policy on health, preventing ill-health and health systems to evidence theory and methods to support decision-making. The unit is currently based at Newcastle University,

NIHR PRU Behavioural Science needed a website that better communicated their work and also increased engagement with their different users, including Government.

With the unit being funded by National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the website needed to adhere to their strict guidelines around brand and content accessibility.

In order to meet our goals, we broke down the project into the following stages: planning, UX design, frontend and backend development, testing, and launching.

During the pre-migration planning phase, we conducted a comprehensive review of the current University website’s usage and performed a technology due diligence assessment. We also had team discussions regarding role assignments and established sprints for planning, design, and development

To kick off the design process, we conducted a UX workshop with all stakeholders. During the workshop, we gathered critical information, identified key performance indicators (KPIs), and defined the user personas to understand the various users of the website and their specific needs and goals. Based on this information, we developed customer-centric wireframes to ensure that the design would be consistent with the client’s and users’ requirements.

Following the creation of wireframes for the initial pages, we used Figma, a UX application, to develop a prototype. We shared the prototype with the client every week to gather feedback and input from relevant stakeholders, ensuring that the project aligned with the business’s requirements.

Once the prototype testing was completed successfully, we began the frontend and backend development in WordPress. We created custom page templates and added draft content. After that, we tested, analysed, and deployed the website through user acceptance testing (UAT) before pushing it live.

The new website communicates to its different user groups, clearly signposts what the unit does and has increased engagement.
